Decade Poster
Project: Creating class rules and designing them into a poster that matches a certain decade.
Ideas: Chose 6 class rules to address. Designed poster according to the 1970's. Used 1970 elements, such as rainbow stripes, circles, and other geometric shapes. Added a paint brush, computer mouse, a drawing tablet and pen, and a camera and photos to represent Beckman's visual arts departments: drawing and painting, graphic design, and photography. (Size: 11 in. x 17 in.)

Slang Poster
Project: Choosing a currently used slang and creating a visual to portray it. Posters should have the slang, visual, and definition.
Ideas: Chose the slang "Ghosted," and designed a ghost that has a text message with no response, hence the "...". Slangs were also designed into stickers, so definition was removed, and I added an outline and background that resembled a grave stone. (Size: 11 in. x 8.5 in.)

Phobia Posters
Project: Choosing a phobia and visually designing it in the Saul Bass style.
Ideas: Chose the phobia, glossophobia, which is the fear of public speaking. Made a single individual look like they were giving a speech in front of an audience. Person is on a podium with a microphone, but they are unable to speak which is why there is an "x" over their mouth. Audience are portrayed as red repetitive circles amidst a dark background to look intimidating. Used rough geometric shapes to resemble the Saul Bass style. (Size: 11 in. x 17 in.)

Cecil Touchon Abstract Letters
Project: Learning how to use the laser cutter and using colored cardstock to cut out the letters of your name. Letters would be used to create an artwork that resembles Cecil Touchon's style. Negative space should be apparent.
Ideas: Chose a good font and created different sizes of my name in both lower case and upper case. Used purple cardstock and cut letters even more, arranging them to make negative space. First artwork has too much empty space in the middle, but there is improvement in the second one when comparing the before and after.
(Size: 7 in. x 5 in.)

Ideas: Chose an album by Slim Whitman and made symbols that represented the countryside song style. Made the mandala look like a sunflower. (Vinyl Record Size: 12 in. x 12 in.)
Bauhaus Practice
Project: Using only geometric shapes to create the Beckman clocktower in the Bauhaus style to prepare for the actual project
Ideas: Used guidelines and alternated different shapes. Mostly symmetrical. Made different color variations. The primary colors are the Bauhaus colors. (Size: 8.5 in. x 11 in.)

Bauhaus Project
Project: Choosing something that is symmetrical and replicating it in the Bauhaus style by using geometric shapes and guidelines. Projects can be done on wood, acrylic, mixed media, or as an animation.
Ideas: Chose to do a fox. Decided to do coasters, so I made a set of three to be engraved into wood. The theme was arctic animals: arctic fox, arctic hare, and polar bear. (Artwork Size: 8 in. x 8 in. | Coaster Size: 4 in. x 4 in.)

Wednesday Exercises
Project: Replicating an image in our style based on our interpretation. Exercises are typically every Wednesday, and we have one class period to complete them.
Ideas: Kept the general idea of the original image the same, but added and/or changed elements using my creativity.
Numbers represent the order in which the Wednesday exercises were done (e.g. 1 = week 1, 2 = week 2, etc.)

Self Portraits of Letters

Ideas: Planned to do a side profile of myself using the font, "Garamond." Used a monochromatic purple gradiant and a light pink color for the background.
(Size: 5 in. x 7 in.)

Postcard for Irvine Fine Arts
Project: Using what we learned thus far in graphic design and making a postcard for the Irvine Fine Arts postcard contest
Ideas: Planned to do a side profile of myself using the font, "Garamond." Used a monochromatic purple gradiant and a light pink color for the background. (Postcard Size: 4 in. x 7 in.)

Beckman Logo for T-shirt
Project: Designing a stylized Beckman logo for a t-shirt with the patriot colors, red, white, and blue.
Ideas: Having a student paint the word "Beckman" on a large canvas that is decorated with flowers and stars to represent the spirit and artistic expertise that Beckman's amazing visual arts department offers. The simple logo would go on the front of the shirt while the stylized design goes on the back. T-shirt colors would include navy blue, gray, and white, so the design stands out a bit more.
(Logo Size: 11 in. x 7.5 in.)

Letter Vocabulary
Project: Learning the vocabulary of the anatomy of letters, then selecting two fonts (an older font and a complementary one to with it) and labeling the different letter parts.
Ideas: Chose the older serif font, "Garamond," and complementary script font, "Dalliance." Used beige and olden colors to represent the time period "Garamond" was created. Labeled parts with clear lines and shaded letters with closed and open counters.
(Size: 12 in. x 8.5 in.)

History of Fonts - Bento Grids
Project: Researching your chosen font and time period, and creating an information graphic of the font. Main emphasis should be on the font's unique letters. Design needs the name of font, date when it was created, the whole alphabet, and at least five additional facts. Information should be organized in a bento grid style.
Ideas: Chose the serif font, "Garamond." Unique letters include "g," "e," "a," and "t." Colors are chosen from the Renaissance color palette because the font was created in 1510 during the Renaissance era. (Size: 8.5 in. x 11 in.)

Woodblock Letter Prints
Project: Creating a 4x4 woodblock with the first initial of your first or last name, and including different symbols that represent you, such as the things you like, your hobbies, culture, etc.
Ideas: Chose the initial, "E" from my first name, and incorporated elements from my Vietnamese culture, such as lucky money, lanterns, and blossoms for Lunar New Year. (Woodblock Size: 4 in. x 4 in.)

Decade Font
Project: Creating your own font based on a specific decade or time period. Making a poster including the name and description of the font, and the designed alphabet of upper and lower case letters. Finding primary sources and a collage of fonts to capture the unique style of that decade.
Ideas: Went with the Victorian era, created a font with fancy swirls, added a graphic of steaming hot tea to represent the font name, "Victorian Tea." Use color palette of soft pastels and earthy tones. (Size: 11 in. x 17 in.)
Slang Phrase
Project: Choosing a popular slang phrase and quote from your chosen decade and creating a design for a pencil case, t-shirt, and tote bag.
Ideas: Chose the Victorian slang, "afternoonified," which is a way of saying something is posh. In the Victorian era, having tea in the afternoon was seen as fashionable, so "afternoonified" was associated with this sort of leisurely lifestyle. Also chose the quote, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." by Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities, a novel that was written and published during the Victorian era. (Size: 11.6 in. x 8.2 in.)

Woodblocks for Recipe
Project: Creating three new woodblock prints for texture and to make an interesting pattern for your food recipe.
Ideas: Took apart my original Vietnamese-culture-style woodblock letter print and turned the three different symbols into three different 2x2 woodblock designs. (Woodblock Size: 2 in. x 2 in.)

Family Recipe
Project: Making a family food recipe, incorporating food and pictures of you making it, creating icons for each ingredient, and creating three new woodblock prints for texture and pattern.
Ideas: Decided to do a recipe for Vietnamese egg rolls, chả giò. Took pictures of myself cutting the ingredients, rolling the egg rolls, and deep frying them. Went a beige brown background set-up and used the colors red, lime green, and turquoise for the woodblock patterns. Long shot, high angle of egg rolls in the bottom right corner with the stamped patterns on napkins surrounding the plate. Ingredients and directions on the left while process pictures are incorporated in the geometric design and food set-up. (Size: 8.5 in. x 11 in.)
